Ghars UAE initiative is an initiative to plant mangrove trees for visitors of the COP28 climate conference.
His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan has launched this initiative.
Moreover, this initiative is sponsored by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, and it aims to support the efforts of the UAE in combating climate change.
*Dubai Expo City will host COP28 from November 30 to December 12, 2023.
As per expectations, this initiative will contribute to planting approximately 100,000 mangrove trees in the UAE.
Innovative planting methods for mangrove trees.
The initiative will use innovative methods such as drone-based farming.
Approximately 10 mangrove trees planting will be done for each participating visitor in the conference.
The mangroves planting will be during the last quarter of this year.
Since it is the ideal time to plant this type, within coastal areas which are suitable environments for planting mangroves.
Such as the Marawah Marine Biosphere Reserve, Mina Zayed City, and Jebel Ali Island.
Here are some of the expected environmental benefits of the “Ghars UAE” initiative:
- Mitigating the effects of climate change by absorbing carbon from the atmosphere.
- Protecting coastlines from erosion.
- Providing a habitat for marine life and wildlife.
- Promoting ecotourism.
- Raising awareness of the importance of mangrove trees.
Secretary-General of the Environment Agency in Abu Dhabi, Dr. Sheikha Salim Al Dhaheri confirms “Ghars UAE” initiative importance.
She has confirmed that the “Ghars UAE” initiative is an important step in the efforts of the UAE in combating climate change and protecting the environment.
Furthermore, Dr. Al Dhaheri points out that the initiative aims to support Goal 13 from the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Which calls for urgent action to address climate change and its impacts.
It also supports national initiatives, including the 2050 Climate Neutral Strategy.
Which aims to achieve climate neutrality in the United Arab Emirates by 2050.
Dr. Al Dhaheri adds that the initiative also contributes to highlighting the UAE commitment to achieve climate neutrality.
As well as promoting the use of nature-based solutions to mitigate the effects of climate change.
It also helps to reduce the environmental footprint of conference attendees, as one ton of carbon is absorbed for every 5,000 mangrove trees.
