The UAE flag designer is Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah, he was 19 years old when he designed it.
He was a student at the Abu Dhabi Military College when he saw an advertisement in the newspaper calling for designs for the new flag.
He submitted his design, which was one of 1,030 entries and his design won the contest due to its speciality.

On December 2, it will be exactly 52 years since the UAE flag was first hoisted to mark the country’s union.

He went on to have a distinguished career in government, serving as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1986 to 1999.

Only two flags were raised on December 2, 1971, to mark the formation of the nation – one in Abu Dhabi, the other at Union House in Dubai.

Al Maainah said the colors of the UAE flag were not chosen randomly.

“Every color has an innate meaning. White symbolizes peace, goodness and purity, black represents solidarity, green stands for hope, prosperity and development while red denotes bravery and courage,” he added.

Later, he was awarded 4,000 riyals as prize money, as the UAE dirham was yet to be introduced as the legal tender.

Al Maainah, who has traveled around the world as the UAE’s ambassador to several foreign missions.
Cherishes the honor bestowed on him by the country’s wise and visionary leadership for his design of the flag.

  • Black: The black stripe represents the past and history of the UAE.

History of the UAE National Flag.

The history of the UAE flag dates back to the early 1970s.
When the seven emirates that make up the UAE were still separate entities.

In 1971, the emirates agreed to form a federation, and they held a competition to design a new flag for the country.
A panel of judges that includes the rulers of the seven emirates have chosen the winning design.
December 2, 1971 was the first day that the flag was flown in.

Is the Dubai flag the same as the UAE ?

Yes, the flag of Dubai is the same as the flag of the United Arab Emirates.

The flags of Ajman and Dubai are also identical to the UAE flag.
The only difference is that the flags of Ajman and Dubai have a white crescent moon and star in the center of the white stripe.

The UAE is a federation of seven emirates:
Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah.

The flag of the UAE is the official flag of the federation, and all government buildings and schools do raise it.
