New York Times Discussed the causes of the floods in Libya.
Naturally, Libya has a dry climate and rarely experiences heavy rains.
However, the recent storm that hit the country caused record rains of about 400 mm in Derna and its surroundings.
This indicates that climate change leads to rising temperatures and increasing the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere.
It also contributes to the increasing severity of extreme weather events such as floods.
On the human side, the infrastructure in Derna does not withstand large amounts of rain.
The city suffers from problems with sanitation and roads, making it vulnerable to flooding.
In addition, many residents live in low-lying areas prone to flooding.
Also, Environmental scientist Katherine Mach said:
The floods are the most destructive natural hazards in terms of property and lives.
In the case of the floods in Derna, these natural and human factors led to a disaster that killed thousands of people.
