COP28 Presidency in ADIPEC 2023 called for increasing the production capacity of renewable energy three times.
In the presence of H.H Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, H.E Dr. Sultan Al Jaber confirmed that COP28 presidency is facing challenges directly and with a positive mindset.
This was during his opening speech to the Adipec 2023 exhibition and conference.
He said: COP28 must be a turning point from which the world can return to the right track and embark on achieving the 2030 targets.
Moreover, he called for increasing the production capacity of renewable energy three times to reach 11,000 gigawatts by 2030.
Also he pointed out that the energy sector can play a major role in increasing the production capacity of renewable energy sources.
Al Jaber stressed the need to multiply efforts to turn promises into results.
Also to make ambitions turn into actions, and pilot projects into widely applicable projects, through unity, work, and achievement.
Al Jaber called on the oil and gas sector to join forces and achieve ambitious climate action.
In order to reduce emissions under the COP28 presidency’s action plan.
COP28 presidency’s action plan aimed at achieving a just, orderly, responsible, and logical transition in the energy sector.
And also preserving the possibility of avoiding the rise in the temperature of the Earth’s crust level 1.5 degrees Celsius.
He renewed his call on the sector to take ambitious steps to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
By removing methane emissions and stopping gas flaring before the end of the current decade.
In addition he praised the positive response of more than 20 oil and gas companies.
He said: “This took time, effort, and many months of negotiations, hard work, and cooperation.
But we are still waiting for more companies to join us.
And start taking the necessary steps to accelerate and expand the scope of emissions reduction.”
Oil and gas sector must lead the process of finding the required solutions to face climate change.
He added: “I will call on everyone to participate in this commitment during the COP28 conference.
And I will also call on everyone to raise the ambition ceiling to achieve effective and tangible results.”
He emphasized that the oil and gas sector must lead the process of finding the required solutions.
Moreover, he called on the relevant companies to prove that they are an essential part of the solution.
Pointing out that the basic requirements to respond to are to provide more capital and technological solutions to achieve the desired results.
His Excellency Al Jaber renewed his confirmation of the world’s need to reduce emissions by 43% over the next seven years.
In order to preserve the possibility of avoiding the Earth’s temperature rising to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
The three priorities for necessary actions to face climate change as per Dr. Al Jaber.
-Reducing emissions from energy production.
-Increasing the production capacity of renewable energy sources.
And also reducing emissions from sectors that are difficult to reduce emissions.
Such as steel, cement, aluminum, heavy transport, and others.
In addition, he stressed the need to address urgent issues, including accelerating the licensing of clean energy projects.
As well as overcoming the obstacles that hinder the use of hydrogen on a commercial scale.
And also expanding the application of carbon capture technologies.
He emphasized the need to redefine the relationship between producers and major consumers from economic sectors.
Pointing out that he has been holding meetings since March last year that include:
High-emitting sectors, the energy sector, governments, civil society and non-governmental organizations.
