ADNOC to launch pilot project to reuse electric car batteries in order to reduce emissions and costs at off-grid sites
Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) in collaboration with German company Power I.D. has announced new plans.
ADNOC plans include launching a pilot project to reuse used electric car batteries.
Moreover, the project aims at reducing reliance on diesel generators at ADNOC’s off-grid operational sites.
There are expectations that the system will help to cut drilling rig emissions by up to 25% and reduce energy costs by 50%.
System components
The system consists of 24 used electric car batteries.
While the batteries are assembled in a single movable 20-foot container.
Also, the system has a total capacity of 2 megawatts.
Which is enough to generate electricity to power a drilling rig for up to 24 hours.
Technology used
The system uses the latest technologies applied in electric vehicles, such as:
Connecting the batteries together with converters made of silicon carbide, which is known for its high efficiency and long lifespan.
In addition to relying on advanced liquid cooling technology, which helps to extend the life of the batteries.
And also using an independent control mechanism to ensure effective energy management.
Environmental and economic benefits of ADNOC project with Power ID – Germany
In fact, the system contributes to achieving multiple environmental and economic benefits, including:
Reducing carbon emissions from ADNOC’s operations and providing electricity from renewable sources.
In addition to reducing energy costs.
Next steps
The expected launching date of the pilot project is in 2024.
While the performance evaluation is before a decision which is made on whether to roll it out to other ADNOC operational sites.
Strategic importance of the project
The project of reusing used electric car batteries is an important step in ADNOC’s strategy.
Which aims at achieving net-zero emissions by 2045.
Overall, the project reflects ADNOC’s commitment to developing innovative technologies and solutions to reduce its carbon emissions.
