Leonardo Da Vinci Lifetime Achievement Award for Designer of UAE Pavilion in Expo Dubai 2020.
The 14th Florence Biennale of Arts and Design will honor Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava in October.
In recognition of his contributions, by presenting him with “the Leonardo da Vinci Lifetime Achievement Award in Design”.
He is one of the most influential architects of the past 50 years,” according to a statement from the exhibition.
Calatrava Career in Design.
Throughout his career, Calatrava has designed over 94 projects and has won over 100 awards for his achievements.
Moreover, his work is particularly concentrated in Europe and the Americas.
Also he has had two major projects in Dubai in recent years.
His projects in the United Arab Emirates are:
-The United Arab Emirates Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai.
-The Dubai Creek Tower.
Why has Calatrava won Leonardo da Vinci Lifetime Achievement Award in Design ?
The statement from the Biennale exhibition said the award is also a recognition of his bold experiments and his talent.
As well as his “brilliant ability to combine architecture and art in imaginative projects designed in harmony with nature.”
The architect is also a painter and sculptor.
“who has designed, during a career full of great successes, bridges, infrastructure, conferences and exhibition centers.
Not only as an architect but also as an artist capable of expressing himself through different artistic disciplines, including painting and sculpture.”
In fact he held his first exhibition of sculptures and paintings inspired by ancient Greece in 2022.
To honor his long career, the Florence Biennale will dedicate an entire pavilion to his work.

About his style, an article published in My Modern Met magazine points out that the architect’s approach in design is special.
Due to his use of complex patterns and shapes, where his architecture can be instantly recognized from the design, such as:
-The United Arab Emirates Pavilion at Expo Dubai 2020.
-The Constitution Bridge “Ponte della” in Venice.
– Transportation hub of the World Trade Center in New York City.
– Zubizuri Bridge in Bilbao, Spain.
In addition to other works by him.
Despite being 71 years old, he continues to be active and is the creative mind behind the development of the Greenwich Peninsula project in London.
