A Journey to Reshape African Cities Dealing with Climate Crisis
World Green Economy Organization (WGEO) announced yesterday its support for 11 African cities under the Carbon-Neutral Cities Initiative, in partnership with the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa).
H.E. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Chairman of WGEO announced this at the organization’s pavilion in the Blue Zone at Baku Stadium.
The event was attended by Jean Pierre Elong Mbassi, Secretary General of UCLG Africa.
H.E. Al Tayer emphasized the urgency of addressing climate change.
Moreover, he noted that the initiative marks the beginning of a journey to reshape how cities across Africa effectively tackle the climate crisis.
He highlighted that the Carbon-Neutral Cities Initiative was launched during 2023 World Green Economy Summit in partnership with UCLG Africa.
A New Initiative by World Green Economy Organization
This initiative aims to inspire change and empower African cities to become global models for climate action, leading the way toward carbon neutrality.
H.E. Al Tayer stated that the cities contribute over 70% of global carbon emissions.
They also hold unique potential to lead the transition toward sustainability.
African cities, particularly in emerging regions, possess tremendous opportunities to drive the green economy agenda globally.
They can also contribute to shared sustainability goals.
Comprehensive Support for Cities
World Green Economy Organization and UCLG Africa partnership will address the challenges facing these 11 cities on their path toward carbon neutrality.
WGEO will provide integrated support tailored to each city’s unique needs.
With focus on building the capacities of city leaders.
As well as enhancing their expertise with the latest tools and best practices in sustainable urban planning and climate resilience.
The first African cities to benefit from this initiative will receive support through a specialized platform.
In order to develop robust, data-driven strategies for achieving carbon neutrality.
Green Economy Summit on Carbon-Neutral Cities in 2025
H.E. Al Tayer expressed gratitude to UCLG Africa.
He also highlighted the pivotal role of local governments in climate action.
Moreover, he announced plans to host a Regional Green Economy Summit on Carbon-Neutral Cities next year, in collaboration with UCLG Africa.
This event will further empower African cities besides serving as a precursor to the next 10th African Cities Summit.
WGEO has also invited global partners, investors, and stakeholders to join the mission of creating carbon-neutral cities across Africa.
World Green Economy Organization Signs A Memorandum of Understanding
On the sidelines of COP29, WGEO signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of Palau.
The MoU was signed by H.E. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer and H.E. Surangel Whipps Jr., President of Palau.
It focuses on advancing low-carbon solutions and protecting natural resources.
With a special emphasis on ocean conservation—crucial for Palau as a leading Small Island Developing State (SIDS).

President Surangel Whipps Jr. stated that this partnership enhances Palau’s sustainability journey.
As it is focusing on critical areas such as ocean protection and green economy strategies.
Mentioning that its benefit will not only be for Palau as the global community will benefit too.
H.E. Al Tayer welcomed the partnership, reaffirming WGEO commitment to a sustainable global economy.
He also confirmed that the voices of vulnerable nations are heard by global action toward a more sustainable and resilient world.
