The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) aims to to improve waste management in Abu Dhabi and conserve natural resources.
This is by a strategic plan with 6 key goals to be achieved by 2041.
A Systematic and Long-term Approach
This plan comes as part of the EAD’s commitment to developing a sustainable, efficient, and integrated approach to waste management.
Mentioning that it comes in response to the growing pressures on waste management and natural resources in the emirate.
The Environment Agency clarified in its 2023 annual report that the purpose of this plan is to encourage a systematic and long-term approach to waste management in Abu Dhabi.
With the vision of becoming a “waste-free” emirate by 2041.
The Goals of EAD for Waste Management in Abu Dhabi include:
- Reducing the generation rate of municipal solid waste to 1 kilogram per person per day.
- Treating 90% of all municipal solid waste.
- Treating 99% of all hazardous waste.
- Recycling 40% of non-hazardous solid waste.
- Treating 90% of all non-hazardous waste.
- Reducing the rate of illegal waste disposal by 90%.
Actions To Ensure EAD Plan Implementation
The The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) emphasized its undertaking of several actions to ensure the implementation of this plan, including:
Inspection Campaigns:
EAD conducted 49 inspection visits across 36 waste management facilities.
Which resulted in 170 fines issued, 26 complaints addressed, and the achievement of 81% compliance rate.
Awareness Campaigns:
EAD held 12 awareness sessions regarding waste management challenges last year, benefitting around 1,325 participants.
Clean-up Campaigns:
EAD organized 11 clean-up campaigns through “Sahem” program for National Service, collecting 7.5 tons of waste.
Mentioning that over 756 volunteers participated in these campaigns.

This plan is a positive step towards achieving sustainable waste management in Abu Dhabi.
Aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
