The United Arab Emirates has made rapid steps in implementing its space research strategy, which was announced in March 2019, with the aim of directing the bodies and institutions concerned with the space sector to advance work in it by setting ambitious programs and missions, strengthening space research and development efforts, and expanding the scope of work in this sector that depends on research that represents An important locomotive for progress.
UAE space research
On September 29, it began the third step in its space-related strategy, as it announced its grand project to explore the moon, just 70 days after the second step, which is the launch of the Hope Probe to Mars on July 19, in an exploratory scientific space research mission of its climate and its different layers of the atmosphere, and to answer very important questions, foremost of which are the factors of losing the oxygen and hydrogen gases in this envelope, by tracking the path of the two gases atoms in their exit from it, and how its climate changes throughout the day and in the seasons of the year.
Among these questions also are the nature of the relationship between climate patterns in Mars and the extent of their connection with its varied topography, the causes of surface erosion, and other questions that deciphering its mysteries will enhance scientific knowledge of outer space, provide great service to humanity, and open new horizons for countries and scientific and research institutions concerned with this space around the world.
These two major steps were preceded by the dispatch of the first Emirati astronaut, Hazza Al-Mansoori, in September 2019 to the International Space Station, which was designed with the aim of preparing humans to spend a long time in space and conducting research related to it, and was launched in November 1998.
The Lunar Exploration Project aims
It is the first of its kind at the Arab level and the fourth at the global level, aims to achieve great scientific goals such as studying new sites that have not been previously researched on the surface of the moon, analyzing dust particles on it, conducting tests to know the nature of the lunar soil, and measuring optoelectronics located above the illuminated portion of this surface.
This Lunar Exploration Project mission also includes testing technical devices and equipment that have not been tried before in areas such as communications, navigation, and remote sensing, to determine their effectiveness in the difficult lunar environment, which is more severe than the Martian environment, and that it could be used in other missions to explore outer space.
Thus, the UAE contributes to supporting scientific accumulation in the field of space research, as well as making use of this research in several areas to support its progress.
