UAE: Excessive Veto Usage Undermines International System, Thwarts Conflict Resolution
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has expressed its deep concern over the increasing excessive Veto usage at the UN Security Council.
Particularly in issues related to the Arab region and the Palestinian cause.
During a UN General Assembly meeting on the initiative to use the Veto in the Security Council, Mohammed Bouasseba, Second Secretary at the UAE Mission to the UN, delivered a statement.
In his statement, Bouasseba stressed that the annual discussion on the use of the Veto in the Security Council is an “Opportunity to engage in a constructive dialogue on the cases in which the Veto is used.”
Nine out of 13 Vetoes Were Related to Issues in Arab Regions
The statement emphasized the need to establish clear and specific criteria for the use of the Veto in accordance with international law.
In addition to the will of the vast majority of member states, and the views of the Secretary-General.
“We would like to express our deep concern over the sharp increase in the use of the veto in the Security Council during the past twelve months,” Bouasseba said.
“Since April 2023, the Veto has been used 13 times, an exceptional increase compared to previous years.
What is even more worrying is that nine of these cases (about 70%) were related to issues in our region, particularly the Palestinian cause.”
He added: “This disturbing pattern underscores the urgent need to reform the Security Council.
And ensure that the Veto is not misused to undermine the will of the international community”
