TikTok Lite Raises Concerns in the EU and France over Potential Addictive Behavior
The new “TikTok Lite” app is raising concerns for the European Union and France.
As the principle on which it is based may encourage addictive behavior among youth.
Moreover, the app rewards users who spend a certain number of minutes daily watching videos with virtual coins that can be exchanged for gift cards.
The European Commission Asked For A Clarification Within 24 Hours
The European Commission asked TikTok to provide a clarification within 24 hours.
To clarify the risks associated with the launch of its new app in France and Spain.
The TikTok Lite app, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, was launched without much fanfare at the end of March.
It rewards users with virtual coins if they log in daily for ten days.
And if they spend time watching videos (up to a maximum of 60 to 85 minutes per day).
Also if they perform certain actions, such as liking videos and following content creators.
These virtual coins can then be redeemed for gift cards on partner sites such as Amazon.
It is Hard To Convince Users With The New Service.
TikTok is mainly focused on dance or music videos.
It also has succeeded in attracting over 1.5 billion users worldwide.
But has been accused for years in the United States and Europe of distracting young people by focusing on content that is described as superficial.

TikTok has confirmed that it is in direct contact with the European Commission about TikTok Lite and intends to respond.
It is under investigation launched by the Commission in February over alleged failures to protect minors under the Digital Services Act.
TikTok is primarily seeking to attract new users and combat stagnant user growth in Europe.
Through its new rewards system, TikTok is also seeking to improve user engagement, which is essential in this sector.
