UAE’s First Joint Mission to Antarctica Completes Scientific Expedition
The UAE’s first joint mission in collaboration with the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute has successfully completed its inaugural scientific expedition to Antarctica.
This groundbreaking achievement is confirming the UAE’s strong commitment to advancing global scientific research.
It is also strengthening international partnerships in meteorology and climate science, and actively contributing to global efforts to combat climate challenges.
Scientific Achievements in Extreme Conditions
As part of the expedition, two Emirati specialists in meteorology and seismology undertook a challenging journey to one of the most harsh and remote environments on Earth.
Their mission involved:
- Installing two advanced weather and seismic monitoring stations to collect crucial data on atmospheric activity and seismic movements in Antarctica.
- Enhancing the accuracy of numerical weather prediction models
- Improving seismic monitoring
- Contributing to a better scientific understanding of environmental conditions in this critical region.

Despite facing freezing temperatures, powerful winds, and complete isolation, the team successfully:
- Conducted significant climate change research.
- Installed cutting-edge weather monitoring devices.
- Studied the impact of glacial melting on rising sea levels.
- Collected atmospheric data to analyze the effects of polar climate on global weather patterns.
Recognition of UAE’s Leadership in Climate Science
Dr. Abdullah Al Mandous, Director-General of the UAE National Center of Meteorology and President of the World Meteorological Organization, praised the success of the UAE’s first joint mission to Antarctica, stating:
“This scientific expedition to Antarctica is a major step in strengthening the UAE’s leadership in meteorology and climate science on a global scale.”
