Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President’s Representative and brother of the UAE President, passed away, 3-day official mourning period to be observed.
With the death of Sheikh Sultan, the UAE has lost one of its most loyal men, who escorted the late founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, since the early journey of establishing the Union.
Sheikh Sultan is the second son of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, founder of UAE. He was born in 1955. He was educated at Millfield School in Somerset in the United Kingdom and is a graduate of Sandhurst military academy. He served as Commander-in-Chief of the UAE Armed Forces with a rank of Brigadier from 1978 to 1982.
He was appointed as Chairman of the Public Works Department, Abu Dhabi in 1988.
Sheikh Sultan was appointed as deputy prime minister in the fifth UAE cabinet in 1990 till 2008. He was appointed as the president’s representative which he held until his death.
Sheikh Sultan held various portfolios such as Chairman of the Zayed centre in Abu Dhabi, chairman of the media and cultural centre, chairman of the Emirates Heritage Club and chairman of Zayed centre for coordination and follow-up, a member of Supreme Petroleum Council, and a member of Abu Dhabi Investment Authority.
