Geneva Conference Participants Praised the UAE Role.
The conference “The Role of Human Rights in the Context of Armed Conflicts” focused on the humanitarian efforts of the UAE in armed conflicts.
Mentioning that the speakers highlighted the UAE’s leading role as a donor of humanitarian aid relative to its national income.
The UAE’s humanitarian and relief initiatives for those affected by armed conflicts helped in ensuring basic human rights like:
Life and health by providing water, food, hospitals, healthcare support, and treatment for the wounded.
The UAE’s efforts during its UN Security Council membership were clear by supporting Resolution 2720.
This resolution called for concrete steps to increase humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza and protect UN and aid workers in armed conflicts.
The Conference Recommended:
- Strengthening international mechanisms for protecting civilians during armed conflicts.
- Ensuring international commitment to uphold international humanitarian law.
- Providing immunity for humanitarian aid workers.
- Enforcing humanitarian ceasefires and safe corridors for delivering humanitarian, relief, and basic necessities to civilians.
- Banning military actions threatening civilians, especially women and children.
- Enhancing protection for civilian infrastructure including homes, essential services, and medical facilities.
- Strengthening international accountability mechanisms for violations and crimes committed during armed conflicts.
- Boosting the role and contributions of NGOs in humanitarian aid programs and initiatives during armed conflicts.
Participants included:
- International experts and UN Special Rapporteurs.
- Representatives from various human rights organizations and initiatives.
- Representatives from international bodies, mechanisms, and organizations.
- UN-accredited journalists.
- Representatives from countries participating in the 55th High-Level Session of the Human Rights Council.
The Conference Addressed Topics such as:
- Efforts by the UN and the international community to stop and end armed conflicts.
- Strengthening civilian protection.
- Implementing safeguards and procedures to enhance international protection.
- Preventing violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law.
- The efforts of various organizations and countries to coordinate humanitarian and relief assistance in armed conflicts.
- Humanitarian aid programs and initiatives undertaken by countries through national mechanisms or by supporting UN efforts.

The conference concluded with a working paper presented by Dr. Aye Carey Soe, President of the Burmese Youth Academy, on “The role of education in strengthening civil and humanitarian protection during armed conflict and promoting adherence to international humanitarian law”.
Mentioning that it was moderated by Mariam al-Ahmadi, Vice-President of the Federation’s Society for Human Rights.
Who provided input from participants, deepened the role of civil society and the United Nations, and offered possible and practical solutions in improving the reality of civilians during war and armed conflict.
