The 37th World Judo Championship kicks off in Abu Dhabi.
The 37th World Judo Championship kicked off today at the Mubadala Arena in Abu Dhabi.
The championship is bringing together 682 athletes from 110 countries for a week of fierce competition.
Adding to that, it will run until next Friday, featuring the world’s top-ranked judokas vying for gold medals and Olympic qualification.
Day One Highlights:
- Men’s under-60kg and women’s under-48kg and under-52kg preliminary rounds took place in the morning session.
- The men’s under-60kg and women’s under-48kg and under-52kg finals took place in the evening session.
Remaining Days Schedule:
- Day Two (May 20): men’s under-66kg and under-73kg; women’s under-57kg preliminary rounds; official opening ceremony at 5:15 PM; finals start at 6:00 PM.
- Day Three (May 21): men’s under-81kg, women’s under-63kg preliminary rounds; finals start at 6:00 PM.
- Day Four (May 22): Men’s under-90kg, women’s under-70kg, and under-78kg preliminary rounds; finals start at 6:00 PM.
- Day Five (May 23): Men’s under-100kg and over-100kg, women’s over-78kg preliminary rounds; finals start at 6:00 PM.
- Day Six (May 24): Mixed team competition; preliminary rounds start at 12:00 PM; finals start at 6:00 PM.
Prize and Significance:
- A total of one million euros (approximately 4 million UAE dirhams) in prize money will be awarded to the winners.
- The championship is considered a major milestone in the international judo calendar, serving as a qualifier for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.

UAE National Team:
- The UAE national judo team is ready to compete with eight athletes:
- Men: Narmand Biyan (under 66 kg), Karim Abdel Latif (under 73 kg), Talal Shevli (under 81 kg), Aram Grigorian (under 90 kg), Zafar Kostov (under 100 kg), and Omar Maqroof (over 100 kg).
- Women: Bisheerat Khouri (under 52 kg), Batsu Altangerel (under 57 kg)
