Abu Dhabi Ports Group announced that the first ship-to-ship liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation at Khalifa Port was done successfully.
This milestone supports Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading hub for alternative marine fuel and sustainable maritime solutions.

Details of the First LNG Bunkering Operation by Abu Dhabi Ports Group

The operation was carried out simultaneously with cargo handling activities.
MSC Tessa container vessel, docked at Abu Dhabi Terminals.

The vessel received LNG fuel from the Green Zeebrugge, a specialized LNG bunkering vessel provided by Monjasa, a company specializing in marine fuel supply.

This achievement highlights Abu Dhabi Ports Group’s capabilities in delivering essential and efficient services.
Through its advanced infrastructure and world-class port operations.
While also facilitating access to low-carbon fuel options.

The Highest Standards of Safety and Environmental Sustainability

Captain Saif Al Mheiri, CEO of Abu Dhabi Maritime and Chief Sustainability Officer at Abu Dhabi Ports Group, stated:

“The Group and Monjasa are ensuring shipowners have access to a variety of fuel choices to help them meet their emission reduction goals.
By adhering to the highest standards of safety and environmental sustainability.”

He emphasized the Group’s ongoing commitment to providing forward-thinking solutions.
As they drive progress toward global sustainability objectives.

Abu Dhabi Ports Group and Monjasa Plans

LNG is recognized for its significant contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Compared to conventional marine fuels, it results in lower emissions of sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter.
Supporting both environmental and industrial objectives.

Following this success, Abu Dhabi Ports Group and Monjasa plan to expand LNG bunkering services.
This expansion will be across Abu Dhabi commercial ports, including cruise vessels at Zayed Port.
The fuel portfolio will include low-sulfur fuel oil, marine gas oil, and high-sulfur fuel oil.

LNG Bunkering: A Step in the Transition to Sustainable Marine Fuels

This LNG bunkering at Khalifa Port was executed following best practices and international regulatory standards, including LNG bunkering protocols, as well as the guidelines set by:

  • The International Maritime Organization (IMO)
  • The International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH)
  • The International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
  • Society of International Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators (SIGTTO)

Through this initiative, Abu Dhabi Ports Group aims to accelerate the transition to sustainable marine fuels.
It further solidifying Abu Dhabi’s role as a key player in the global energy transition.
It also supports the UAE’s strategic goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
