UAE Participates in the Diplomatic Conference on Industrial Design Law
The UAE participated in the Diplomatic Conference on Industrial Design Law, chaired by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Under the umbrella of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the conference started on November 11 and concluded today in Riyadh.
The Diplomatic Conference on Industrial Design Law represents the final phase of negotiations for a treaty.
This treaty will enhance comprehensive legal protection for industrial designs and intellectual property at both regional and global levels.
Thereby fostering a culture of innovation and creativity.
The UAE representative at the conference was “Dr. Abdul Rahman Hassan Al Muaini” Assistant Undersecretary for Intellectual Property Sector at Ministry of Economy.
Daren Tang, Director General of WIPO has also participated in this conference.
Along with a large number of representatives from WIPO member states.
UAE Supports WIPO in All Means
Dr. Abdul Rahman Al Muaini emphasized that the treaty marks a new starting point.
That is facilitating the registration of industrial designs for creators and innovators worldwide.
Providing all necessary means and mechanisms to support the multilateral intellectual property system and simplify procedures that protect their rights.
In this context, he stated: “The UAE is keen to support the Diplomatic Conference on Design Law and its outcomes.
It will continue cooperation and exchange of experiences and best practices with WIPO member states.
Moreover, it will join all treaties and agreements related to intellectual property under WIPO.
Playing a prominent and effective role in supporting international efforts in this regard.”
He expressed the UAE’s support for the statement delivered by the delegation of Pakistan on behalf of the Asia-Pacific Group at this conference.
Key provisions of the Diplomatic Conference on Design Law New Treaty
Dr. Abdul Rahman Al Muaini noted that the treaty includes key provisions such as:
- Preventing the unlawful appropriation of traditional designs
- Supporting technical assistance and capacity building
- As well as other procedural issues requiring enhanced cooperation among member states to ensure successful negotiations.
It is also important to align views between member states and stakeholders, especially small and medium enterprises.
The UAE has provided 30,000 food baskets to support Sudanese refugees in the Kiryandongo camp in Uganda.

31 Integrated Initiatives by the UAE
Recently, the UAE has launched a new set of initiatives to enhance intellectual property protection.
They include 31 integrated initiatives to support innovation and creativity in the country, based on global best practices.
These initiatives include “Patent Incubator” project.
The project is documenting the patent registration process across the seven emirates.
It is also providing support to innovators, and encouraging them to apply for all their intellectual property rights.
It is worth noting that the intellectual property sector in the UAE has achieved positive results and indicators.
Mentioning that the total registered trademarks in UAE markets reached 356,408 by the end of September 2024.
Adding that more than 15,000 patents and utility models and industrial designs registered in the country.
