The social media remains the main source of news for more than half of the UAE’s population (52%).
This is according to YouGov website report on how media consumption and interaction habits have changed in the UAE.
With a 2% increase over last year, 55% of the UAE’s total population prefers to read news content online compared to print newspapers.
While 88% of the population spends time reading newspapers on a digital broker per week, for example, via browser, app, etc.
The Main Source of Information
Social media grown as a source of news with an increase from 52% in 2021 to 55% in 2023.
Followed by news newspaper websites, which rose from 41% in 2021 to 45%.
And also TV rose from 38% in 2021 to 42% in 2023.

Last ranked is news apps that advanced from 27% in 2021 to 30% in 2023.
The Internet deepens its roots as a source of information worldwide.
While social media and newspaper sites have become the most important sources of news for all generations in the UAE.

Social Media Beats Television
Social media sites rank first, 40% of young people up to the age of 24 are using it to get information.
Rising to 53% for the group from 24 to 34, 55% for the group from 35% to 44, and decreasing slightly to 51% for those aged 45 and above.
In contrast, online news sites are the second in usage, 32% of those aged 24 and younger.
Their use increases by 40% per cent among the youth between 25 to 34 years.
And to 42% among those whom their age is 35 to 44, and continues to rise to 45% for the most important over- 45 years.
Television is the third, with 32% for those aged 24 and under, 37% for those aged 25 to 34, and 39% for those aged 35 to 44.
In addition to 42% for those aged 45 and above.

About confidence in news sources, 51% of users of these sites expressed confidence in thematic sites in 2022.
Also this percentage preferred objectivity rose to 54% in 2023.
Ranking Based on the Most Used
Facebook is still the most used.
Even its number of users declined by 5%, from 73% per 2021 to 68% in 2023.
While YouTube’s user base rose from 59% in 2021 to 62% in 2023, during the same period the use of YouTube declined.
Also WhatsApp usage declined 3% from 61% to 58%.
Tiktok achieved a 7% rise in users from 24% to 31% between 2021 to 2023.
Followed by “Instagram” which usage increased 5% from 51% to 56% during the same period.
