Highly Dynamic Landscape for Intellectual Property
Between January and September 2024, the UAE attracted 18,175 new trademarks.
Representing a substantial 39% growth compared to the same period in 2023.
During this time, the Ministry of Economy received 24,258 trademark registration requests.
In addition to 8,171 inquiries about trademarks.
These efforts increased the total number of registered trademarks active in the UAE to 356,408.
This reflects a highly dynamic landscape for intellectual property (IP) in the country across multiple vital economic sectors and commercial activities.
National Initiatives Supporting the Growth of Trademarks
The Ministry’s latest IP report for the first nine months of 2024 highlighted significant growth in the registration of copyrights, trademarks, patents, and utility certificates.
This achievement is credited to national initiatives that foster pro-innovation environment, implement forward-thinking policies, and support economic and scientific research as well as technological activities.
These steps also reflect the UAE’s commitment to becoming a global center for IP protection.
This directly aligns with “We the UAE 2031” vision to position the UAE among the top ten attractive countries.
IP Registrations Statistics
Breaking down the statistics further, IP registrations in various sectors saw noticeable growth:
- Copyrights: Registrations grew by 34.3%, with 1,884 copyrights registered in the first nine months of 2024, up from 1,402 in the same period of 2023.
- Trademarks: Trademark registrations increased by 39.12%, as the Ministry processed thousands of new applications across sectors.
- Patents and Utility Certificates: Patents and certificates saw an 8% increase, with 3,489 new patent applications and 17 utility certificate requests received. Cumulatively, there are now 15,051 patents, utility certificates, and industrial designs registered in the UAE.
- Industrial Designs: The Ministry recorded 886 industrial design registration applications.
While the total number of registered industrial designs grew to 9,340, marking a 5.7% year-on-year increase.

Trademarks and Intellectual Property Protection
Further enhancing IP services, the Ministry also reported an uptick in requests for IP protection support.
As well as copyright registrations in scientific, technological, and economic fields. For example:
- The Ministry handled 1,946 applications for copyright registration—a 53.23% increase over last year.
- A special service for reporting IP rights infringements received 153 requests.
- Requests for the registration of importers and distributors of IP-protected content grew by 26.67%, with 209 applications submitted.
This strategic focus on IP rights serves multiple national goals, including promoting knowledge-driven economic growth, enhancing the UAE’s global competitiveness, and encouraging creativity across various sectors.
It also underscores the UAE’s growing reputation as a hub for innovation, creativity, and IP protection aligned with global best practices.
