High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy (Ocean Panel) Welcomes the UAE
The United Arab Emirates has announced its joining of the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy (Ocean Panel).
Mentioning that it became the first country in the Middle East and North Africa region to achieve this milestone.
Due to its leadership in climate and biodiversity fields.
The UAE made the announcement during a meeting of world leaders on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Protecting 30% of the World’s Oceans
The Ocean Panel, established in 2018 and co-chaired by Norway and Palau, aims to address challenges related to climate change, pollution, and overfishing.
This is in coordination with member states, committed to sustainably managing their oceans.
Adding that the panel’s members are working toward protecting 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030.
Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, the UAE’s Climate Pioneer for COP28 and President of IUCN, appointed as a high-level advisor for the UAE in the panel.
Al Mubarak emphasized the importance of ocean protection.
Because it is a key factor in achieving climate balance and supporting sustainable development.
She added: “Ocean health is a foundation to sustain life on our blue planet.
It is the world’s largest ecosystem that helps to regulate climate and provide valuable resources.”
Commitment to Ocean Panel
Al Mubarak underscored the UAE’s commitment to the Ocean Panel.
Working with international partners to strengthen the protection of nature.
And also to support the sustainable development of ocean-dependent communities.
The benefits of ocean governance and its marine ecosystem were not limited to achieving biodiversity targets.
But ocean protection efforts would result in reducing greenhouse gas emission levels.
As well as supporting sustainable livelihoods around the world.
