Inauguration of “NAQA’A” Seawater Desalination Plant
His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, officially inaugurated the “NAQA’A” seawater desalination plant in the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain.
“NAQA’A” is one of the largest reverse osmosis seawater desalination projects in the world.
With a daily production capacity of 150 million gallons of desalinated water.
This massive plant is a result of a partnership between Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), Mubadala Investment Company, and Acwa Power from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
A significant strategic step towards achieving water security in Emirates by:
- Enhancing the sustainability of freshwater supplies in the country.
- Reducing the water scarcity index.
- Meeting the growing demand for water in the northern regions of the UAE.
- Supporting various consumer sectors in those areas.
- Driving economic growth.
“NAQA’A” utilizes modern and innovative technologies aimed at reducing energy consumption, such as:
- Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs).
- Pressure Exchanger (PX) Technology.
These technologies have helped to decrease the amount of electricity consumed by the plant by up to 60%.
The desalinated water produced by the plant is managed through an integrated system that controls flow rates and pressure.
This system starts at the main pumping stations, progresses through transmission lines, reaches strategic storage centers.
And finally connects to distribution networks, ultimately reaching the end consumer.

Quality Control
The amount of water produced by the plant is subject to a comprehensive distribution program that encompasses all areas served by EWEC.
The company is committed to implementing rigorous quality control procedures to ensure the quality of water produced and distributed to consumers.
This includes adhering to national requirements and the World Health Organization’s (WHO) standards for safe drinking water.
NAQA’A plant is an exceptional achievement that adds to the UAE’s record of accomplishments in water security.
It underscores the country’s commitment to providing sustainable water resources for future generations.
