Meta Develops its Own Infrastructure

Meta undersea cable name is “Project Waterearth”.
It is described as Meta’s “most ambitious project” to improve global connectivity.

Even they are susceptible to damage and sabotage.
Undersea cables form the critical backbone of digital communications.

Global digital traffic continues to grow.
Due to AI advancements and resource-intensive generative AI models.
Because of this growth, tech companies are developing their own infrastructure to meet increasing demands.

According to Meta, the project represents a “multi-year, multi-billion-dollar investment.”
Mentioning that the new cable will provide advanced connectivity for the following:

  • The United States
  • India
  • Brazil
  • South Africa
  • As well as other regions

Currently, almost all global digital communications rely on undersea cables.
With 450 to 500 active cables stretching between 1.2 million and 1.4 million kilometers worldwide, depending on the source.

Market Competition & Strategic Importance

As of 2021, the global undersea cable market was dominated by four companies:

  • SubCom (USA)
  • Alcatel Submarine Networks (France)
  • Nippon Electric (NEC, Japan)
  • HMN Technologies (China)

However, tech giants like Meta are now building their own undersea cable networks.
This is to address economic and technological challenges in the industry.
