Argentine star Lionel Messi left his team’s MLS game against Toronto on Wednesday in the 37th minute amid concerns over a muscle injury.
Messi had missed Inter previous game on Saturday, which the team lost 5-2 to Atlanta.
This was due to muscle fatigue, before leaving the field on Wednesday, where he appeared to be in discomfort.
His former Barcelona teammate Jordi Alba also left the field in the 34th minute.
Argentine coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino said the pair will miss Sunday’s Florida derby against Orlando City.
And he is also unsure if they will play in next week’s US Open Cup final.
Martino said:
“We have to take it day by day and see the doctor’s report and what they tell us and we will decide.
It is clear that there is no chance of them being there on Sunday.”
Martino defended his decision to play Messi and Alba against Atlanta.
“I don’t think it’s anything new or bigger than what they were suffering from.
It’s just fatigue, and I don’t think there’s a muscle injury.”
He added in response to questions about them being pressured to play:
“Everything was ready for them to play…
There is no possibility of that.
If we decided to play them, it was because they were ready to play.”
“After talking to them, I don’t have the same pessimism that I had when I had to take them off.”
12 games in a 48-day period played by Messi.
Messi has played 12 games in a 48-day period since the start of his stint in the United States in late July.
He was substituted in the closing minutes of Argentina’s 1-0 win over Ecuador in South American World Cup qualifying on July 7.
And then missed the Bolivia match five days later.
Despite the loss of the two players, Miami still managed to win 4-0 against Toronto.
Inter Miami remains in 13th place in the Eastern Conference out of 15 teams.
But it is still in contention for a playoff spot. Martino.
However, stressed that his priority is the US Open Cup final against Houston on July 27.
