Characterized by a surge in travel spending and robust growth in passenger traffic.

Despite currency fluctuations and varying affordability levels, travel demand remains stronger than ever.
The UAE ranked among the top 9 most popular destinations globally over the past 12 months.
Top summer destinations for 2024 as per Mastercard Economics Institute
As per travelers from the UAE, London, Athens, and Paris are the top summer destinations this year.
On a global scale, Japan took the top spot as the most popular destination last year.
While Munich is expected to be the most popular summer destination this year (June-August 2024), coinciding with the UEFA Champions League.
The report highlights the travel industry’s flourishing state in 2024.
With nine out of the last 10 record-breaking spending days occurring in the air and cruise sectors this year.
Interestingly, travelers departing from the Middle East have become more selective about their travel destinations and timings.
They are spending more on nearby regional destinations.
In contrast, travelers to Africa and the Middle East are extending their stays by an average of three days compared to pre-pandemic times.
Spiking Travel Demand
Global travel witnessed remarkable growth in the first quarter of 2024.
Middle Eastern tourism boards have also announced several first-of-their-kind achievements:
Following a record-breaking visitor year in 2023, Dubai recorded an 11% increase in tourist arrivals in Q1 2024.
For the first time in its history, Saudi Arabia welcomed over 3 million inbound visitors per month.
A trend that continued for three consecutive months this year (January-March 2024).
Egypt recorded a 27% annual growth in visitor numbers in 2023.
Morocco’s inbound tourist arrivals reached 3.3 million by the end of Q1 2024, a 12.8% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
Extended Leisure Stays
Travelers to Africa and the Middle East spent an average of three additional days on their vacations compared to the global average of one day.
Unlike pre-pandemic times, UAE visitors stay an extra day.
While in Morocco, the extension reaches four days.
Mastercard Economics Institute indicates an inverse relationship between destination prices and the number of days spent there.
In other words, the lower the destination prices, the longer the length of stay.
Extended stays provide a boost to local economies in the travel sector, as they translate into higher spending per trip.

It is the highest level recorded in at least the past five years, as of March 2024.
In the UAE, tourist spending on moderately priced restaurants has increased by around 21% compared to the same period last year.
Major events like concerts (such as Taylor Swift’s) and sporting events (such as the Cricket World Cup) are driving global travel trends.
In 2027, the world’s attention will turn to Egypt, which will witness a total solar eclipse directly above the pyramids.
Mastercard Economics Institute’s analysis showed a significant increase in sales in areas along the total solar eclipse path that occurred in the United States.

Notable Growth in Cruise Travel
Given the widening gap between hotel and cruise prices, cruises have become a preferred choice for many vacationers.
As a result, the global transaction rate for cruise travelers increased by around 16% in Q1 compared to 2019.
In March, the “Cruise Arabia Alliance” was established by the maritime and tourism authorities in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, and Oman to solidify the Arabian Gulf’s position as a global cruise destination.
Overall, the global travel industry is experiencing a robust rebound in 2024.
Driven by strong consumer demand and a desire to explore new destinations and have meaningful experiences.
Rising spending trends and increased travel movement indicate a positive outlook for the rest of the year.
