As per the directives of HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, the UAE has allocated a financial grant of $64.5 million to Makassed Hospital in East Jerusalem.
This aimed at supporting operational expenses, medical staff, and facility upgrades.
Key Healthcare Facility in East Jerusalem
Dr. Tariq Ahmed Al-Amiri, Chairman of Emirates Red Crescent, stated:
“The UAE is collaborating with various international organizations and regional institutions to enhance healthcare services in East Jerusalem, Gaza, and other priority areas.
He highlighted that Makassed Hospital in East Jerusalem is a key healthcare facility.
As it is specializing in cardiac surgery, pediatric and orthopedic clinics, medical research, and comprehensive healthcare services.

WHO Praises UAE Support for Makassed Hospital
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO, expressed the organization’s gratitude to the UAE for supporting Makassed Hospital.
Because this support will allow WHO to:
- Supply the hospital with necessary medications and vital medical equipment.
- Expand medical imaging capabilities
- Enhance the maternity and gynecology department
- Assist in training over 100 individuals across 11 medical specialties

Dr. Omar Abu Zaida, General Director of Makassed Hospital in East Jerusalem, conveyed his deep gratitude and appreciation to the UAE.
Due to its continuous support of both the medical and administrative staff at the hospital.
He stated:
“The UAE’s support means a great deal to us as Palestinians.
Since its founding by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may he rest in peace), the UAE has consistently stood by our side.
It was offering assistance in every way possible, particularly for the city of Jerusalem.
We take pride in the UAE’s steadfast, historic, and ongoing efforts to support Jerusalem’s institutions.
By improving healthcare services, and ensuring better access to care for all patients, especially women and children.”

About Makassed Hospital
Makassed Hospital in East Jerusalem was officially opened in 1968 with an initial capacity of 20 beds.
Today, it has grown to over 250 beds, employing approximately 950 medical and administrative staff.
The hospital also operates a specialized residency training program covering 13 medical disciplines.
Those disciplines are accredited by both the Palestinian Medical Council and the Jordanian Medical Council.
To date, the program has graduated more than 540 specialized doctors.
The hospital serves more than 66,000 patients annually, including residents of Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza Strip.
