Authorities in Dubai have announced the launch of a brand new helpline. That will allow people to report cases of abuse against children. The 24-hour hotline will act as a single number where anyone in Dubai can report assault or abuse.
Quarantine raises concerns about vulnerable children
Life has changed a lot in the last few weeks. Due to the global outbreak of Coronavirus (COVID-19) people worldwide have found themselves quarantined inside their homes for extended periods of time.
When children required to stay inside indefinitely they do not have an opportunity to escape from abusive situations, even temporarily. This has raised concerns with UAE Authorities that vulnerable young people may be at greater risk than usual.
The new hotline launched under the direct instruction of the Crown Prince of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
The United Arab Emirates Community Development Authority (CDA) is working directly with Dubai Police to ensure every case investigated and dealt with appropriately. Cases will be evaluated on an individual basis before action is taken.
Protecting the lives of children is a priority
It is mandatory for doctors, teachers, childcare workers, social workers, and others involved in the care of children. In order to report abuse under UAE child protection law, Article 42.
Those making a report should not fear retribution from abusers though. Under Article 44 witnesses entitled to refuse disclosure of their identities in cases of child abuse. With these protections in place, the authorities hope. That citizens will do the right thing and report all cases of violence, abuse or neglect of children.
