Masdar City, the center for sustainability and innovation in Abu Dhabi, laid the foundation stone for the first net zero energy mosque in the region.
This mosque will generate at least as much energy as it consumes throughout the year.
The following gentlemen were at the cornerstone ceremony:

- Mohamed Al Breiki, Executive Director of Sustainable Urban Development for Masdar City
- Dr. Bakheet Al Khateri, Chief Investment Officer for the Emirates at Mubadala Investment Company
- Abdul Aziz Al Houil, Director of Construction Management Services at Mubadala Investment Company
- Samer Al Masri, Chairman of M4 Company
Project Significance:
Ahmad Baqer, CEO of Masdar City, highlighted the importance of this community-focused project.
The mosque will serve as a religious gathering place, community center, and place of worship.
All while embodying Masdar City’s commitment to developing projects that benefit humanity.
This new project sets a new standard for the role of houses of worship both regionally and internationally.
Net Zero Energy Mosque Features:
- Total area of 2,349 square meters.
- Capacity for 1,300 worshippers.
- Energy consumption reduced by 35% compared to international baselines.
- Will generate 100% of its annual energy needs using on-site photovoltaic panels.
- Constructed with rammed earth, a high-quality insulator to help maintain cool temperatures within the building.
- Utilizes natural lighting and ventilation techniques to minimize energy demand.
- At least 70% of construction waste will be reused.
- Water usage will be reduced by 55%.
- Aims to achieve global green building certifications, including LEED Platinum and WELL Gold.
Masdar City’s Achievements in Net Zero Energy Buildings:
- In January 2024, Masdar City opened its first house of worship, the “Sustainability Mosque.”
- Masdar City completed the nation’s first net zero energy office building (NZ1).
- Two additional net zero energy commercial and residential buildings are under construction:
The headquarters for the Masdar City Square project and the CO-LAB co-working and co-living space within The Link project.
