On entering Dubai, all tourists would receive a free pre-paid mobile SIM card. Thanks to the joint ‘happiness’ project, which has been started by Du Telecommunications, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreign Affairs (GDRFA- Dubai) and Smart Dubai.
On Sunday, 16th June, Major General Mohammed Al Marri during a press meet at the Dubai International Terminal 3 mentioned that the free ‘tourist sim pack’ would be given to all tourists above 18-years-of age at the Immigration counter. He further stated that the traveler would be presented with the SIM card on the basis of their travel document, which involves the travelers’ passport and a valid visit visa.
The pilot phase of “Connect with Happiness” project grants travelers with transit visa, visit visa, visa on arrival, and GCC citizens arriving at Dubai International Airport to take advantage of free du Tourist SIM cards. The SIM card would allow the tourist to get three-minute talk time and 20 MB mobile data for free. The SIM card would remain valid for 30 days, or the duration of the tourist’s stay.
Fahad Al Hassawi, Deputy CEO – Telco Services, Du, stated that the system works in sync with the immigration system, and would be deactivated once the tourist exits the nation. Alternatively, the SIM would be valid for 30-days only. The tourist can also top-up their SIM for three packages- small, medium, and large.
Authorities think this project would help to augment the happiness of all visitors visiting Dubai. Presently, the SIM would be offered to passengers exiting Dubai Airport terminals 1,2, and 3.
It has been also stated that in case a tourist changes his status to a Dubai resident, he would not be able to convert the number into a permanent one.
