Emirati Student Develops Smart App to Help Epilepsy Patients
Driven by concern for her father’s well-being and a desire to enhance his safety and quality of life, student Noor Al Ahmed has developed the innovative smart application “EpiAware App”.
The app is designed to assist epilepsy patients in managing seizures and improve their overall safety.
Noor’s project integrates smart home technology and wearable devices with her EpiAware app.
Offering a transformational approach to epilepsy management.
The project focuses on incorporating advanced technologies within a culturally relevant framework.
Ensuring that societal perceptions—which significantly influence healthcare participation—are taken into account.

How EpiAware App Works
Noor explained that by integrating machine learning algorithms with smart home technology and wearable devices, EpiAware enhances patient safety and improves quality of life.
The application monitors epilepsy patients in real time.
It also collects detailed health data to assist both algorithms and doctors in providing timely interventions.
Moreover, the app predicts potential seizures by analyzing neurological responses, muscle electrical activity, and heart rate fluctuations.
If a seizure is detected, EpiAware coordinates an emergency response.
Helping to prevent complications that could endanger the patient’s life.
According to the Epilepsy Foundation, sudden seizures claim 1,000 lives annually.

A Culturally Adapted Solution
Noor, a Strategic Design student at Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI), highlighted the uniqueness of her project:
“What sets my project apart is the adaptation of technological solutions to the cultural and social context of the UAE and the region.
It respects patient privacy, enhances personalized healthcare, and educates the community about epilepsy.
Especially on how to respond during sudden seizures.”
The app stores critical medical data and personal health information, ensuring maximum safety for epilepsy patients.
In the event of a seizure, EpiAware app automatically sends alerts to the patient’s family, doctor, and healthcare professionals.
Sharing the patient’s real-time location to facilitate the fastest possible emergency response.
