Emirates Airline becomes first airline in the world to operate a test flight with a 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)-powered A380
Trial flights pave the way for harmonization of SAF specifications and standards.
The Emirates A380 test flight comes as aviation industry representatives, international organizations and regulators.
In addition to policymakers gather in Dubai for the third International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Conference on Aviation and Alternative Fuels (CAAF/3).
Emirates Airline and Shell Aviation recently signed a memorandum of understanding.
In order to explore areas of collaboration on sustainable travel and technology-enabled travel experiences.
The two sides agreed to conduct a joint assessment of mechanisms to reduce emissions from travel.

The two sides are also exploring ways to enhance the travel experience by offering exclusive tailored products.
Which are related to business travelers through new technologies.
Including new NDC distribution capabilities.
In fact, Emirates’ development of these new options provides Shell with an opportunity to be among the first adopters of this technology.
Emirates’ long-term efforts are embodied in concrete and targeted actions across three focus areas that form its environmental framework.
Including reducing emissions, responsible consumption, and conservation of wildlife and habitats.
The airline announced this year the establishment of a $200 million fund for research and development projects.
Moreover, the projects focused on reducing the impact of fossil fuels in commercial aviation.
Which represents one of the largest individual commitments by any airline on sustainability.
Over the next three years, Emirates will seek to partner with leading institutions working to find advanced solutions for fuel and energy technologies.
Emirates Airline operated the first test flight in the region using 100% SAF in January last year.
Mentioning that the airline is a strong advocate for research into the use of SAF at higher percentages.
In order to enhance its performance, safety, and reliability.
And also to support standardization, specifications, and the future adoption of 100% SAF.
Which has not yet been approved for regular commercial use.
While Emirates’ first flight using sustainable fuel dates back to 2017, with a Boeing 777-300ER from Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
The airline has since operated flights using SAF from Stockholm, Paris, Lyon, and Oslo.
Meanwhile, Emirates is participating in a number of industrial and government working groups in the UAE.
In addition to ongoing engagement with various stakeholders to help expand the production and supply of sustainable aviation fuel.
