Emirates Airline Joins The Solent Cluster to Reduce Carbon Emissions
Emirates Airline joins The Solent Cluster, a UK initiative focused on low-carbon investments.
This initiative aims to curb carbon dioxide emissions from industry, transport, and households in the south coast of England.
Emirates airline is the first international carrier to join The Solent Cluster.
The Solent Cluster is a multi-sector collaboration of international organizations.
Including manufacturers, engineering firms, regional businesses and industries, logistics and infrastructure service providers, and academic institutions.
Emirates Airline, the world’s largest international airline, joined over 100 existing members.
Alongside founding members Solent Partners (formerly Solent LEP), global energy provider ExxonMobil, and the University of Southampton.
The founding members shared details of their vision for The Solent Cluster and how it can secure existing jobs and produce low-carbon fuel for various sectors, including aviation.
The Future of Sustainable Fuel
The Solent Cluster has the potential to create a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) plant.
Moreover, this plant will have an estimated production capacity of 200,000 tonnes per year.
If approved, the plant would begin operating in 2032.
Highlighting that the jet fuel it produces could avoid 563,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
Representing a 70% reduction compared to traditional fuel.
Existing pipeline networks are suitable to deliver the sustainable fuel from the plant to major airports served by Emirates in the UK.
Such as London Heathrow and London Gatwick.
This is not the first time that Emirates airline joins such initiatives’.
Last year, Emirates’ experimental flights with A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft were using 100% sustainable fuel.
Emirates has also expanded its partnership with Neste to supply sustainable fuel for its flights in Amsterdam and Singapore throughout 2024 and 2025.
In addition, the airline has loaded sustainable fuel at its Dubai hub for commercial flights for the first time in October 2023.
Strong Potential
Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline, stated:
“We are proud to join like-minded organizations within The Solent Cluster initiative.
Which holds strong potential to support clean energy innovation and production.
This is another step forward in our journey towards adopting sustainable fuel across our network in the long term.
We look forward to collaborating with our fellow members in these efforts.
While also witnessing the positive impact the cluster will have on the local economy, the southeast region of the UK, and industries on a wider scale.”
Dr. Lindsay Marie Armstrong, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Chair of the Solent Cluster Industrial Decarbonization Group at the University of Southampton, said:
“The Solent Cluster is a key player in decarbonizing energy-intensive manufacturing processes.
Forming the Decarbonisation Group, involving public, private, and higher education sectors, is a huge step forward for the region.
It will deliver sustainable fuels for local transport, aviation, and freight.
Provide low-carbon energy for heating homes, businesses, and public buildings, and open up new job opportunities.
This can only be achieved by working together as a cross-sectoral society, ultimately striving with the same ambition to achieve a low-carbon economic future for the Solent region.”
