Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) provides safe and reliable supplies of power and water to ensure comfortable living conditions for all residents of Dubai.
Moreover, DEWA upholds the commitment to prioritize and meet the energy and water requirements of the Emirate of Dubai.
Mentioning that it supports the sixth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda:
“Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.”
Achievements:
- Surpassed leading European and American companies in several performance indicators.
- Achieved a 2% power transmission and distribution network electricity loss compared to 6-7% in Europe and the United States.
- Maintained a water network leakage rate of 4.6% compared to 15% in North America.
- Secured the world’s lowest average electricity outage duration in 2023 at only 1.06 minutes per customer.
Pioneering Projects by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority:
- Power Generation and Storage Projects:
- Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park: The largest single-site solar park globally, with a planned production capacity of 5,000 megawatts by 2030.
- Hatta Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Station Project with a capacity of 250 megawatts.
- “Green Hydrogen” project for producing and storing hydrogen using solar energy.
- Jebel Ali Power and Desalination Complex.
- Water Reservoirs:
- Increase water flow rates and boost reserve stocks to meet growing demand.
- Current storage capacity of 882 million gallons.
- Lessili area water reservoir: 60 million gallons of desalinated water.
- Existing water reservoir: 120 million gallons of desalinated water.
- Undertaking construction of three additional reservoirs in Nakhli, Hatta, and Hassyan.
- Increase storage capacity to 1,152 million gallons of desalinated water upon project completion.
Management Systems and Transmission & Distribution Network:
- Smart Water Distribution Management System:
- Enhance the efficiency of field operations for monitoring and remotely controlling Dubai’s water distribution network around the clock.
- Maintain the world’s lowest water network leakage rate.
- Strengthen the monitoring and management of the water distribution network.
- Significantly improve water balance calculations and update network hydraulic simulation data daily.
- Preventive Maintenance Systems:
- Foster Dubai’s pioneering performance in power distribution network cable efficiency.
- Utilize centralized reliability-based and preventive maintenance alongside AI for cable failure prediction.
- Implement the advanced “Condition Assessment Based Reliability Enhancement” methodology.
- Apply the internally developed “Optimal Distribution Cable Life Cycle Management” project to extend the lifespan of distribution cables through an advanced data processing system.
- Automated Smart Grid Restoration System:
- First-of-its-kind system in the Middle East and North Africa region.
- Increase remote control, management, and monitoring of the power grid around the clock.
- Improve grid automation, fault detection, isolation, and service restoration processes.
- Support DEWA’s efforts in maintaining the provision of power supplies with the highest reliability and efficiency.
