COP28 Presidency to Focus on Ensuring International Cooperation and Achieving Progress on Climate Action
H.E Dr. Sultan Al Jaber,the Designated President of COP28, affirmed that COP28 Presidency aims at ensuring international cooperation.
In order to achieve a quantum leap in the global climate action agenda.
Also COP28 presidency aims at transforming promises and pledges into tangible progress that benefits current and future generations.
In his remarks at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) High-Level Week in New York, Al Jaber explained COP28 Presidency’s work plan.
In fact, COP28 work plan includes a series of proposed actions for the public and private sectors in four key areas:
- Accelerating the achievement of an orderly, just, and equitable transition in the energy sector.
- Developing climate finance mechanisms.
- Preserving human well-being and improving lives and livelihoods.
- Supporting the previous pillars by fully integrating everyone into the conference’s work system.
Moreover, Al Jaber stressed the need to find new and innovative solutions to reduce risks.
And also the need to expand the scope of private sector investments.
In order to stimulate increased private investment in climate action and drive macroeconomic stability in emerging and developing markets.
He called on donor countries to meet their commitment to provide $100 billion this year.
And also encouraged them to double adaptation finance by 2025 and replenish the Green Climate Fund.
Al Jaber called on strengthening global action to address the interconnected challenges of climate change.
Al Jaber emphasized the need to focus on human health, safety, and well-being as a key topic during climate discussions.
In addition, he introduced the food systems and agriculture agenda for COP28.
And also reiterated the Presidency’s call to strengthen global action to address the interconnected challenges of climate change and the food system.
Throughout the week, Al Jaber held bilateral meetings with a wide range of senior leaders from around the world, including:
-Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
-Alok Sharma, COP26 President-Designate.
-Kostas Fragogiannis, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece.
-Maroš Šefčovič, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission.
-H.E Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Canada.
-Her Excellency Dr. Hanwha Jin, Minister of Environment of South Korea.
-Amos J. Hochstein, US Special Coordinator for the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment and Energy Security.
UNGA events included participation of COP28 Presidency team members.
Moreover, members of the COP28 Presidency team participated in a wide range of events during the week.
Including a panel discussion on youth philanthropy and a roundtable discussion on the future of the Conference of the Parties.
As well as a dialogue session hosted by Bezos Earth Fund and Salesforce.
In fact, the UNGA meetings were a key step in the COP28 Presidency’s preparations for the conference.
Because it continues its efforts to mobilize the international community to support its plan.
And also to achieve the desired outcomes in global climate action.
