AI Detects Depression in CEOs Through Voice Analysis
A groundbreaking study has shed light on the mental health challenges faced by business leaders.
Researchers have developed an innovative AI-powered tool that analyzes the vocal patterns of CEOs from earnings call recordings.
Published in the Journal of Accounting Research, the study utilized data from over 14,500 calls from S&P 500 companies between 2010 and 2021.
Results revealed a correlation between depression in CEOs and higher corporate risks, such as:

Moreover, these CEOs often receive higher compensation, a phenomenon the researchers attribute to boards attempting to incentivize or support them in the face of challenges.
Deeper Understanding
Nargess Golshan, an assistant professor at Indiana University and a co-author of the study, emphasized that this discovery paves the way for a deeper understanding of the impact of mental health on leadership.
She stated: “We want to shed light on mental health in leadership roles and how it affects organizations and economies.”
While voice analysis as a tool for diagnosing depression is not new.
