Bilateral Relations between the UAE and the European Union

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, discussed the Bilateral Relations and aspects of joint cooperation between the UAE and the European Union countries during a phone call with Josep Borrell Fontelles, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission.

The UAE and the European Union Bilateral Relations

Bilateral relations between the European Union and the United Arab Emirates have grown and deepened through trade and investment activities, development and humanitarian cooperation, energy cooperation, and cultural and educational exchanges.

The UAE is an important trading partner of the European Union, and the European Union countries welcomed the “achievements” that have been made in the field of deepening relations between the European Union and the Emirates, since the establishment of the Union Mission in Abu Dhabi. . The United Arab Emirates was the first Arab country to conclude an agreement to exempt its citizens from entry visas to European Union countries, in May 2015, with member states of the Schengen Area.

The UAE represents the largest export market for the European Union in the Gulf countries, with its exports amounting to (42) billion euros in 2017, representing (2.3%) of the total exports of the European Union, and total trade in goods between the European Union and the UAE (52.6) billion euros.

Developments in Bilateral Relations

His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Josep Borrell also discussed several regional and international issues of mutual interest, including developments in bilateral relations in Europe and the United Arab Emirates, and recent terrorist operations in France and several European countries.

His Highness and Josep Borrell, Vice President of the European Commission discussed developments in the Ethiopian situation and the importance of enhancing security and stability in Ethiopia, and the two sides agreed on the importance of continuing consultations and strengthening bilateral relations between the United Arab Emirates and the European Union.

UAE cooperation with the countries of the European Union

His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan affirmed the state’s keenness to strengthen the Bilateral Relations and develop joint cooperation in all fields with the countries of the European Union.

His Highness affirmed that condemning extremism and terrorism in all its forms is the firm position of the UAE and its solidarity with friendly countries in the world in their war against them.
