The plant comprises four APR-1400 nuclear reactors, each contributing to its total nameplate capacity of 5600 MW.

The Barakah plant is situated in the Gharbiya region of Abu Dhabi, along the coastline between the Persian Gulf and the E11 highway.
Specifically, it’s about 50 km west of Ruwais.
Construction began in stages:
- Unit 1: Construction started on 19 July 2012, and it began supplying electricity on 3 August 2020.
- Unit 2: Construction commenced on 16 April 2013, and it started operation on 14 September 2021.
- Unit 3: Construction began on 24 September 2014, and it became operational on 10 October 2022.
- Unit 4: Construction started on 30 July 2015, and it began generating power on 23 March 2024.
The total cost of the project was $24.4 billion.
Once fully operational, it will prevent the release of up to 21 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
