Apple vs. Samsung in Smartphone Market in 2023
Apple surpassed its South Korean rival Samsung in smartphone sales for 2023.
Marking a “power shift at the top of the biggest consumer electronics market,” according to research firm IDC.
IDC stated in a Monday press release that “the last time a company other than Samsung held the top spot in the smartphone market was in 2010.”
Apple’s Continued Success
The California-based company sold over 234 million iPhones last year, which gave it a 20.1% share of the global market.
Nabila Popal, research director at IDC, noted that:
This is the first time Apple has held the largest share of the smartphone market.
And that it was “the only company among the top three to achieve positive year-on-year growth” of 3.7%.
Moreover, Apple achieved this feat despite facing “increasing regulatory challenges.
As well as a renewed competition from Huawei in China, which is its biggest market.”
She believes that “Apple’s continued success (…) is largely due to the growing trend towards high-end devices.
Which now account for more than 20% of the market, the high volume of trade-in offers for older phones, and interest-free financing plans.”
Apple vs. Samsung Market Sales
Samsung came in second place, selling over 226 million devices, a decrease of 13.6%, giving it a 19.4% market share.
The South Korean giant is scheduled to unveil new smartphones powered by artificial intelligence on Wednesday in San Jose, California.
This is a topic that Apple rarely discusses at its conferences despite the significant interest in these technologies.
Ryan Reith, vice president of the AI market division at IDC, said that the competition in this area is “fierce.”
Standard & Poor’s expects the UAE economy to witness growth exceeding 5% in 2024, exceeding global growth rates.

Apple’s leadership comes amid a 3.2% decline in global smartphone sales in 2023.
Reaching 1.17 billion units, the “lowest annual volume in a decade.
Largely due to the difficulties caused by the macroeconomic situation,” according to IDC.
However, the company expects a rebound in 2024, with growth of 8.5% year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2023.
