Environmental Monitoring in Abu Dhabi: A Commitment to Clean Air
Air pollution monitoring in Abu Dhabi provides the Environment Agency with high-quality scientific data on the location, levels, and time of pollution occurrence.
This data is essential for developing and implementing effective policies to combat air pollution throughout the Emirate.
EAD’s efforts are part of a broader search for sustainable solutions that contribute significantly to supporting national environmental efforts.
Monitoring Network
EAD has developed a comprehensive air quality monitoring network.
That continuously monitors the ambient air quality in the Emirate.
The network consists of 20 fixed stations (8 in Abu Dhabi, 6 in Al Ain, and 6 in Al Dhafra), as well as 2 mobile stations.
Each station is equipped with 17 monitoring devices and sensors.
Which collectively generate data that is used to produce over 69 reports each year.
Odor Monitoring
EAD has also launched the first Odor Monitoring Network Project in the region.
This project is part of EAD’s ongoing efforts to protect the environment, improve air quality, and safeguard public health.
The first phase of the project involved the installation of 10 fixed odor monitoring devices (7 in Abu Dhabi and 3 in Al Ain).
In addition to 2 mobile odor monitoring stations.
The network collects real-time and regular data, and tracks odors emitted from various facilities and activities.
It monitors 12 parameters, including:
Sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde, chlorine, nitrogen dioxide, and methyl compounds.
Air Purification Tower
EAD has chosen Al Hudayriat Island to be the site of the region’s first air purification tower.
This ambitious project aims to improve air quality in the Emirate and shape a vision for a clean and sustainable future.
Moreover, the 7-meter-tall aluminum tower uses environmentally friendly positive ionization technology to purify the surrounding air.
It can purify 30,000 cubic meters of air per hour and consumes only 1170 watts of electricity.
Emissions Monitoring in Abu Dhabi
In a related context, EAD has launched an innovative project that electronically links all continuous monitoring systems for emissions from the chimneys of major industrial facilities in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi to an emissions monitoring database.

The project also collects real-time monitoring data.
EAD’s efforts in air pollution monitoring and control demonstrate its commitment to protecting the environment.
In addition to ensuring a healthy and sustainable future for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
These efforts are aligned with the UAE’s national environmental goals and contribute to the global fight against climate change.
