Abdelrahman

Barakah is the first nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates as well as in the whole Arab area.

The first reactor unit is expected to be authorized by 2020.The nuclear power plant is expected to generate up to a quarter of UAE’s electricity needs, while offsetting more than 21 million tonnes of greenhouse emissions a year, when fully working.

This is a major landmark for the UAE peaceful nuclear energy plan. Participating in building Emirati nuclear expertise is essential for the sustainability of the UAE peaceful nuclear energy programme to achieve the nation’s determined goals.

The project is being jointly developed by Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) and the reactor contractor Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). It is located approximately 53km west-southwest of the city of Ruwais in Abu Dhabi.

UAE is empowering nuclear-powered plants to convene their electricity request, which is measured to expansion from 15 GWe to over 40 GWe in 2020. In December 17 , 2009 US and UAE signed a Section 123 Agreement for peaceful nuclear collaboration. UAE has also signed Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, along with the other process.

Nuclear Instruction in the UAEstarted in April 2008, the UAE Government officially announced its interest in evaluating nuclear energy as a further source to meet the country’s increasing energy demands.

The Policy of the United Arab Emirates on the Assessment and Potential Development of Peaceful Nuclear Energy, otherwise known as the Nuclear Policy concluded that nuclear power emerged as a proven, environmentally confident and commercially inexpensive energy source compared to other options.

The Nuclear Policy also highlighted the establishment of an independent, cautious and effective supervisory body as being the keystone of a stable, trustworthy, safe, and secure

USA and the UAE, which input into potency on 17 December 2009 and allows the UAE to obtain nuclear know-how, resources and equipment from the US.

As part of the contract, the UAE dedicated to forgo domestic uranium enrichment and reprocessing of spent fuel, as well as sign the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Additional Protocol, which establish a more severe reviews regime on the UAE’s nuclear events.
