The United States and China leading the way in this technology.
Generative AI tools are known for their ability to create images, videos, and written content.
As well as answer questions and perform online tasks based on simple prompts.
These AI-powered assistants are evolving rapidly.
ChatGPT
Artificial intelligence existed before ChatGPT, but this chatbot was the first to make generative AI widely available for free as a dedicated application.
OpenAI has continuously enhanced ChatGPT, with its latest update being GPT-4.5.
A new version of the chatbot was released late last year.
It introduced a new generation capable of taking time to think before responding, providing comprehensive answers and reducing errors.
Additionally, OpenAI has equipped ChatGPT with “agent” capabilities, enabling it to browse the internet, gather information, and use computers as humans do to complete tasks.
Gemini by Google
Google has long integrated AI into its platform, but in March 2023, it launched Bard to compete with ChatGPT.
Bard was later replaced by Gemini, a more advanced AI tool.
Google integrated Gemini into its search engine to display summarized results, along with links for in-depth answers.
Additionally, Google expanded its AI capabilities by allowing users to search using images, videos, and audio instead of just text.
The Gemini 2.0 model, capable of “step-by-step reasoning,” debuted in February 2024.
Meta
Meta has embedded AI into its apps, including Facebook, Instagram, Threads, WhatsApp, Messenger.
And even its Ray-Ban smart glasses, aiming to make AI the most widely used digital assistant globally.
Meta’s chatbot is based on Llama, an open-source AI model considered one of the most powerful in the world.
Recent reports suggest that Meta is planning to launch “Meta AI” as a standalone app, directly challenging OpenAI and Google.
Grok
Elon Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI, cut ties with the company.
Since ChatGPT became the leader in generative AI, Musk has sued OpenAI, attempted to buy it, and launched his own AI project under xAI.
Musk’s chatbot, Grok, is unique in its ability to train on data from X (formerly Twitter), giving it access to a vast pool of real-time content.
Musk promotes Grok as a witty chatbot with a distinct personality and fewer restrictions on content generation.
DeepSeek
Founded in 2023, the Chinese startup DeepSeek made headlines in January 2025 with its R1 model, which disrupted the generative AI landscape.
The company claims its AI tool operates using less advanced chips than its competitors, making it more cost-effective.
DeepSeek app was downloaded tens of millions of times within weeks of its launch.
